The only drama in the Volunteer State governor's race is whether Rep. Zach Wamp can upset Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam in the Republican primary

Building political hype and creating momentum..Wamp, Brad Anders and Tim Burchett's guide to successful public relations

I have been critical of Wamp somewhat in the past. However, team Zach has definitely won the PR battle at Neyland Stadium.
I went to the UT game yesterday and spoke to both Zach and Bill Haslam. What I found interesting is how badly Haslam blew it and how successful Wamp was at attracting football fans.

Zach had moon pies...drinks... chili bbq and a swarm of volunteer supporters handing out stickers!!! Zach and I spoke about Brian's blog.... conservative values and stuff for a couple of minutes.

So then I headed over to the Haslam camp. I wanted to see what $5,000,000.00 buys...answer a few volunteers an empty crowd and some stickers...I spoke with Haslam about the recent tabled vote on drive thru's for banks and pharmacies. He was nice friendly and we spoke on a real substantial issue which was great. However, overall I did not get the energetic positive momentum feel I got at the Wamp booth.

End result, Wamp might not have Haslam beat on money...but Wamp appears to have Haslam him well beat on public relations and passion from his unpaid campaign staff! Passion and public relations may become Wamp's greatest equalizer to Haslam's huge bankroll.
Haslam can buy campaign ads, stickers, strategists, 'get out the vote' workers, tv time, radio time, and internet banners...but the one thing he can't buy is passion.

***switching gears***

So then we take it to the local level. Again lets look at building hype and creating momentum.

Burchett, through his network of supporters via his facebook page arranged a petition signing host party. Basically, a light food and beverage sampling at a laid back atmosphere where supporters stopped by his home and signed his petition for County Mayor. The gathering got great local POSITIVE MEDIA TV COVERAGE. Cost almost nothing and was highly successful.

Earlier in the week on Thursday, Brad Anders, utilizing Facebook had a more formal gathering at Karns Hall. Again, a very successful event. I don't even live in Brad's district, but I support his vision so strongly that I will be more then willing to walk, knock, and stuff newspaper boxes for him. Again, via a facebook notification I was able to participate.

Sadly, many Republican politicians in Knox Co, don't have a Facebook page! To be honest, as a Knox County Republican Committee member, it EMBARRASSES THE CRAP OUT OF ME WHEN SOMEONE SAYS 'Dan, you want me to trust someone to run our government who is so in the dark ages they don't use twitter, facebook, youtube, myspace, or anything? Dan, if they can't keep up with changing technology, how the heck are they going to keep up with changes laws and a changing government?"

For the record you can follow me on http://www.facebook.com/knoxcounty and http://twitter.com/knoxcounty I practice what I preach. I took the easiest name to remember. Today, was a little different format from the normal.
